Women's Rugby Wraps Up Regular Season Victorious
The Army West Point women's rugby team closed out its regular season in style Saturday, as the Black Knights defeated Quinnipiac, 55-14. Quinnipiac (2-5, 1-3) came out of the gates hot to start the day, scoring in the first minute. The Bobcats kept the pressure on Army (6-1, 4-0) for most of the first half, exchanging tries with the Black Knights in the opening 40 minutes. Charisma Henry, Damaria Morton, Nicole Wantlin, and Alex DiMarco all scored tries in the first half for Army, who went into the break leading 20-14.
The Black Knights turned it on in the second half, scoring five unanswered tries to cement the win. Morton added a second try, along with three by Kaitlyn Schwarting, and one by Rebecca Syrup to round out the scoring. Army finishes the 2019 league slate with a perfect 4-0 record in NIRA matches and clinches the No. 1 seed in the opening round of the NIRA Championships. The Black Knights move to 3-8 all-time in varsity 15s play against Quinnipiac. Damaria Morton's two tries on the day extend her team lead to 13 this fall. Kaitlyn Schwarting scored a hat-trick for the first time in her career. She now has five during the 15s season. McKenzie Borchers notched five conversions on the day, which brings her season total to 13, tops on the team. Read more.
