Department instructor, CPT Michael Matheny led the USMA Chess Club to a strong showing in the 63rd Annual Armed Forces Open. Twelve cadets played a five-round tournament consisting of Active Duty and Retired service members from around the country representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Space Force. At the tournament, the West Point Chess Club beat the Navy team earning recognition as the "Top Service Academy Team". Cadets from the club also took home awards as 1st place overall, US Armed Forces Open Champion, and 1st and 2nd place for Top Cadet/Midshipman performance. There are nearly 140 cadet clubs at West Point including athletic, recreational, academic, religious, hobby, and diversity clubs – something for virtually every interest, made possible by donors supporting the Margin Of Excellence.
