Recently, CDT Saleem Ali ‘24 and CDT Sebastian Neumann ‘25, had the opportunity to virtually present their research at the Atmospheric Science Conference 2022, which is typically held in England. Under the guidance of Dr. Theodore Hromadka from D/Math and CPT Bryce Wilkins '17, a former Mathlete and currently a data scientist at the Artificial Intelligence Center in Pittsburgh, the cadets examined multiple numerical methods for modeling the Laplace equation, which is used to describe a range of physical phenomena, including steady-state heat transfer, electrostatics, and ideal fluid flow, among others. The presentation featured new optimization algorithms for determining the locations of basis functions used in the overall approximation function. In particular, the presentation focused on an optimized application of the method of fundamental solutions to a demonstration problem of ideal fluid flow.
