Farewell Message from LTG (R) Steve Gilland ’90

Long Gray Line Teammates,

When I assumed command as Superintendent four years ago, I likened the Academy to a fast-moving train that most of us jump on and try to hang on. Since then, I have come to appreciate that what fuels that train is the incredible energy that runs through this place, generated by the dedication and hard work of all those who serve here, and more importantly, the motivation and excellence of the Corps of Cadets. They are the reason we are here and represent the very best of our Nation. Every day, they inspire us with their discipline, resilience, intellect, and commitment to something greater than themselves.

I have also come to appreciate that this train is also fueled by you, the Long Gray Line, through your support, your example of selfless service and professional excellence, and your enduring belief in our Academy and the values it represents. We are truly honored and grateful for all you do for our alma mater.

Congratulations to LTG Jay Bartholomees and his wife Kristin as Jay begins command as “Supe 62.” He, along with our BG Joe Katz and BG Nick Gist, are the right leaders for our Academy as we collectively develop leaders of character for our Nation.

West Point is far more than an institution. It is a place of purpose, character, and selfless service. For nearly 225 years, your Academy – THE United States Military Academy – has developed leaders of character for our Nation, committed to the ideals that define who we are as graduates: Duty, Honor, Country.

This extraordinary institution is also bigger than any individual, and it has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as one of its stewards. Serving as your “Supe” has been a privilege that Betsy and I will carry with us forever.
