Army West Point baseball saw yearling infielder Anthony Giachin garner Patriot League Player of the Week praise Tuesday.
This was the league's first weekly honors of the season and Giachin's first as a player of the week. The Livingston, N.J., native was tabbed the rookie of the week on three different occasions last season before being selected the 2018 Patriot League Rookie of the Year.
Giachin batted .429 (6-for-14) during Army's 1-2 opening weekend that included a victory over service-academy rival Air Force. The yearling drove in 11 runs on three doubles and one home run while also scoring four times himself. He closed the weekend with a .857 slugging and .500 on-base percentage.
A highlight from the weekend was his 5-for-5 performance with two doubles, one home run, four runs scored and eight RBIs in a 17-2 win over Air Force in the season opener. His eight RBI tied an Academy record for most in a game and was the first time a cadet achieved that feat since Mike Scioletti did so against New York Tech in 1997. He was also one triple shy of hitting for the cycle in the contest.
For his impressive performance, Giachin was also named the College Sports Madness Patriot League Player of the Week. Read more.
