The Army West Point Softball Team closed out the first leg of its Florida trip with a dominant 9-1 run rule victory over St. Francis (PA) on the final day of the USF Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase on Sunday. The Black Knights improved to 7-13 on the season, while the Red Flash dropped to 8-15. Megan Muffett and Ally Snelling led attack with a pair of two-hit efforts, including a home run for Muffett and a two-RBI double by Snelling. The duo added multiple RBI in the game with Muffett driving in a game-high four runs. Cow Macey Newbary provided a masterful performance in the circle, limiting St. Francis to just one run while scattering five hits over six innings of work. She walked one and struck out three batters.
The Missoula, Mont., native retired the side in order in three of the six innings. Army exploded for five runs in the third inning after producing its largest two-out rally of the season. After rookie Jolie Duong earned a one-out walk, she stole second with two outs. The Houston, Texas, native scored two batters later, taking advantage of a throwing error to tie the game. Emily Ballesteros walked in the next at-bat to load the bases for Snelling who belted a ground-rule double over the right field wall. Muffett followed with a screaming single up the middle to plate Ballesteros and Snelling to cap the five-run frame. Newbary came out the next inning and shut down SFU in order as part of a stretch where she retired nine-straight hitters. Read more.
