Rookie 141-pounder Corey Shie and firstie 197-pounder Rocco Caywood of the Army West Point Wrestling Team earned at-large bids to the NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon. The Black Knights now have six wrestlers in the national tournament, along with cows Lucas Weiland (157 lbs.), Cael McCormick (165 lbs.), Ben Harvey (174 lbs.) and Noah Stewart (184 lbs.). This is the most NCAA qualifiers for Army since the 2008 season. Shie became the first plebe Cadet to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Bryce Barnes in 2013 after finishing fourth place at the conference tournament.
The Fairfield, Ohio, native owns a 26-14 record in his first collegiate season, including a team-best 16 bonus point wins on seven falls, two technical falls and seven major decisions. Caywood qualified for the second straight year after collecting an at-large bid last season. The Toledo, Ohio, native went 1-2 last season at NCAAs and currently sports a record of 25-6 following his seventh-place finish at the EIWA Championships. Shie, Weiland, McCormick, Harvey, Stewart and Caywood will compete at the NCAA Championships at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh from March 21-23. Read more.
