Nine cadets from USMA Model United Nations team traveled to San Francisco, CA to participate in University of California Berkeley Model UN Conference (UCBMUN), hosted by UC Berkeley. UCBMUN presented the West Point MUN team with the opportunity to develop public speaking skills, gain knowledge of international affairs. Schools in attendance included University of Chicago, Florida International University, UCLA, and Claremont McKenna, among many others.
Cadets participated in several interesting debate topics including but not limited to the recognition of genocide in the UN Security Council, civil administration of 1960s Indonesia in the Ad-Hoc Committee, and representation of women of color in social movements in the NAACP, among many others. Cadets had the unique opportunity to hear from Herb Behrstock, a UN Administrator with 35 years of experiences as an international civil servant, who discussed his role in multi-lateral China-Russia-North Korea negotiations.
Additionally, CDTs Govern and Mccurry visited Ken Hicks ‘74, former CEO for Foot Locker and Payless Shoes and donor for the Model UN team, who imparted career advice and wisdom to the visiting cadets. The conference ended with multiple individual awards given to cadets, with the entire team performing well and displaying exceptional speaking skills, negotiation, and cooperative problem solving with over 300 other students from domestic and international universities. The following cadets were individually recognized for their outstanding performances: CDT John Lorenz ’20, Amanda Mcdonough ’22 and Katie McCurry '19.
