Three members of the Electronics Experimenters Club (ELEX) volunteered as judges and scorers at the Long Island FIRST Robotics Regional Championships at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. Cadets Adam Patula '19, Jared Fritz '19, Nolan Pierce '22 and MAJ Joshua Groen supported the event and the Academy's outreach mission in New York City. The competition consisted of over 45 teams, including teams from Turkey, China, and Brazil.
The Cadets applied their technical skills, including the skills they have learned and honed at ELEX, in evaluating the robots' design and performance, and in suggesting improvements to the teams. Their duties included interviewing the students and discussing how they built their robots to solve a specific challenge. The cadets' understanding of robotic drive systems, PID control and operation, and power delivery systems were invaluable in providing informed assessments, and they made a significant contribution in the judges' room.
The cadets talked with students about their future and enlightened them about West Point. Making a lasting impression many expressed interests in expanding West Point's support in their schools and communities.
