Softball Sweeps Weekly Patriot League Awards

CDTs Taylor Drayton '21 Macey Newbary '20 and Jolie Duong '22The Army West Point Softball Team swept the weekly awards from the Patriot League following its historic series victory over Lehigh, the conference announced on Tuesday. Yearling outfielder Taylor Drayton was named the player of the week for the first time in her career, while cow right-hander Macey Newbary collected her first-ever pitcher of the week honor. Rookie outfielder/pitcher Jolie Duong garnered her second rookie of the week accolades of the season after earning the award on March 19. All three players provided a pivotal spark for the Black Knights en route to their first regular season series victory over Lehigh in 27 years.

Drayton had three multi-hit games and batted .412 (7-for-17) on the week with a double and a home run versus the Mountain Hawks. The second-year outfielder added four RBI and six runs scored, while going a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen bases. Drayton posted team highs in hits, runs scored and stolen bases, while tying for the most extra-base hits with two. On the year, Drayton leads the team in runs scored (22), ranks second in home runs (4), extra-base hits (9) stolen bases (10) and total bases (49), and is third in RBI (17) and doubles (5).

Newbary provided two stellar pitching performances for the Black Knights on the weekend, going 2-0 in 12.1 scoreless innings. The Missoula, Mont., native scattered eight hits and two walks while striking out four Lehigh hitters. She improved to 8-5 to tie Duong for the team-lead in wins while setting a new personal best in victories in a season. She extended her scoreless inning streak to 14.2 frames, while not allowing an earned run in more than 16 innings of work. Newbary owns the third-lowest earned-run average in the Patriot League at 2.30 while limiting opposing hitters to a .239 average against.

Duong went 5-for-10 (.500 avg.) on the week with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored. The Houston, Texas, native recorded a hit in all three games at Lehigh, including a pair of multi-hit efforts in Saturday's doubleheader. She drove in a season-high three runs in the series opener. Read more.
