USMA Unveils General Grant Bronze Sculpture
On April 25, 2019, the U.S. Military Academy unveiled a 1.25 times life-size bronze sculpture of General Ulysses S. Grant, Class of 1843. A gift of the Honorable Robert A. McDonald '75 and his wife, Diane, the 7.5-foot high portrait sculpture rests on a 4.5-foot high granite pedestal and faces the Plain, roughly halfway between the Thayer and Sedgewick monuments. The Grant Monument is the work of master sculptor Paula Slater and fulfills the National Defense Authorization for Fiscal Year 2017 request to place a statue of Grant at West Point to mark his sesquicentennial as the 18th president of the United States.
