For many years the Department of Social Sciences (SOSH) has been charged with improving the financial literacy of cadets. This mission has gained in importance in recent years as we view cadets as the future emissaries of financial literacy to their platoons and companies. While the department approaches this mission from many angles, it is never enough as financial literacy is a life skill that is often under-taught, or in many cases, incorrect or harmful information is taught or passed on. Teaching sound financial advice for saving and encouraging avoidance of "get rich fast" plans is the main goal. SOSH faculty alumnus COL(R) Jamie Gayton published this op-ed on the continuing need for improved financial literacy in the military: Military Financial Literacy.
