U.S. Institute of Peace Simulation Exercise The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) conducted a simulation exercise as one of the culminating events for the Conflict and Settlement course. The exercise featured national reconciliation talks between the major parties to the conflict in Afghanistan. Cadets were assigned roles such as: the U.S. Department of State, the government of Afghanistan, the Taliban, Russia, China, and many more. They used course concepts to develop negotiating strategies and identify the motivations, opportunities, and challenges for all parties involved. USIP ran two iterations of the simulation with separate groups and then conducted a joint AAR to compare the two group's efforts. They also provided real world perspective as one of their team members described her recent engagement with the Taliban during talks in Doha, Qatar.
