Two cadet-athletes from the Army West Point baseball team have been selected to the 2019 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-Region First Team. The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee, which is chaired by Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State University.
Yearling Anthony Giachin and cow Jacob Hurtubise were honored after being named to the first team for the Northeast Region. The two selections marked the second-straight year in which the Black Knights saw multiple cadets honored. Giachin closed out an impressive season in which he finished second on the team with a .316 batting average. The Livingston, N.J., native led the Patriot League with 67 runs batted in, while coming in second in runs (50), hits (74) and sacrifice fly balls (6). The infielder finished with 25 multiple-hit games which tied Clint Moore '09 for a program record. Giachin also set a single-season program record with 25 doubles. He was one of 34 athletes nationwide to be named to the team, and one of two from the Patriot League.
Hurtubise, the 2019 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, littered Army's records book after breaking the program's single-season runs (71), walks (69), and stolen base (45) records. The speedy center fielder set new Patriot League career stolen base and walk marks with 105 and 141, respectively. The outfielder also became the 14th cadet-athlete in Army baseball history to be taken in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. He was the first Black Knight to be selected since Alex Robinett was taken in the 32nd round by the New York Yankees in 2015. Read more.
