Operation Market-Garden Staff Ride
The Operation Market-Garden Staff Ride cadets conducted briefings about the 101st Airborne Division’s actions. Through discussion of drop zone selection, the 101st’s plan for the operation, the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment’s (PIR) attack on the vital bridge at Son, and the seizure of the town of Veghel by the 501st PIR, cadets gained a better appreciation for the influence of leadership, training, and terrain on this operation. One of the highlights of the day’s activities was interaction with a Dutch man who lived in the area during Operation Market-Garden. This gentleman, who was 6 years old in 1944, provided his memories of the fighting around St. Oedenrode and along Hell’s Highway.
