Cadets Learn of the Defense of Devil HillCadet on the Operation Market-Garden Staff Ride traveled to the 82nd Airborne’s drop zones and areas of operation to analyze the actions of the 82nd Airborne from September 17-19, 1944. Through vignettes such as 1LT John Thompson’s seizure of the vital Grave bridge with only 16 men, the defense of Devil’s Hill by elements of 3rd Battalion, 508th PIR, 82nd Airborne Division, and the decisions made by General James Gavin concerning his drop zones and landing priorities, cadets gained a better appreciation for the importance of commander’s intent, initiative at the small unit level, and the momentous task that the 82nd faced in both holding their drop zones along the German border and attempting to seize no fewer than six different bridges in their area of operations.
