The two-time defending Patriot League champion Army West Point Men's Cross Country team kicked-off its 2019 season with a victory in its dual meet vs. Maine on Friday. The Black Knights were paced by plebes Garrett Gough and Matthew Porter who took the top two spots in the meet. Yearling Bradley Pease placed third. It marks the second consecutive season in which the race was won by a plebe, as Marshall Beatty took the top spot in the 2018 event.
"We had some nice competitive efforts out there today and I thought we managed both the race and the conditions quite well. It was a sloppy mess and the terrain was a real challenge of turns and ups and downs." Said Head Coach Mike Smith.
"We have trained at a high level with the upperclassmen for several weeks now, but the plebes have largely been allowed to adapt to collegiate work. They went into this pretty rested, so It didn't surprise me to see two plebes pushing at the front. I was a little surprised that they held the lead all the way to the line. There is a lot of talent in our underclass guys, but they have been held back by the strength of our varsity guys, so today was a nice time for them to step up and own the responsibility to lead from the front."
