Cadets Attend USNA's Women in STEM
The Cadet Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers attended the United States Naval Academy’s (USNA) first Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) Conference and the 10th Science & Engineering Conference (NASEC). Participants listened to keynote speakers on the importance of STEM, heard a panel discuss workplace challenges, and engaged in small group discussions on best practices in inclusive leadership.
The speaker that most inspired the cadet participants was CAPT Overstreet, Deputy Superintendent, USNA. CAPT Overstreet shared how her STEM background helped prepare her for a professional career as a Naval Aviation Officer. The next day, the cadets transitioned to the 9th NASEC, which USNA hosts annually with the intent to bring policy makers and science advisors together with university faculty and students to discuss significant science and engineering challenges. The conference theme for NASEC 2019 was Oceans: Exploration, Conservation, and Extreme Events.
