Bates ’57 Returns to the West Point—An Emotional Homecoming After More Than Six Decades
“I couldn’t wait to leave,” Dean Bates ’57 recalled of his final days as a cadet. Yet, stepping back onto the grounds 68 years later, he was profoundly moved. The highlight of his return was visiting the Cadet Chapel, where he and Katie—the love of his life—were married the day after his graduation. He pointed out the oak tree by the stairs, a familiar sight from his Sunday treks to mandatory services. He also stopped by the Plain to admire the new statue of Ulysses S. Grant (1843) and watched cadets training with Chinooks at Camp Buckner.
Ready to leave West Point after his wedding all those years ago, Dean found himself filled with gratitude for the chance to see his alma mater. “I’m so grateful,” Bates said, “for all the memories.”
