West Point Cadets Honor D-Day in Normandy Through Winant Scholars Program

Published on June 17, 2025

West Point Cadets in the Department of Social Sciences (SOSH) Winant Scholars Program recently traveled to Normandy to commemorate the 81st anniversary of D-Day, reflecting on sacrifice, strategy, and diplomacy at the very site where history unfolded. Photos of the cadets at the anniversary celebration were featured in several major news outlets. This 21-day AIAD experience immerses cadets in the enduring legacy of AMB John G. Winant. They explore the roots of the U.S.-U.K. special relationship forged during WWII and examine how that alliance continues to shape American foreign policy and grand strategy today. More than a history lesson, this program serves as a leadership laboratory, connecting the past to present-day challenges in diplomacy, strategy, and character development. Out-of-classroom experiences like this are made possible by generous donors who support the Margin of Excellence.
