Last week, MAJ Brian Mahoney’s Systems Engineering section took a unique look at Systems Thinking. MAJ Mahoney used Operation Red Wing (the inspiration for the book/movie The Lone Survivor) as an example of a complex system and applied Systems Thinking to the operation. They also discussed MAJ Stephen Reich ’93 who was KIA in Operation Red Wing.
The class was treated to a tour of MAJ Reich’s memorial inside Doubleday Stadium. 2LT John McKenna (Engineering Management ’20), the Army Baseball team’s Athletic Intern, helped lead the discussion. 2LT McKenna drew on his own Department of Systems Engineering (DSE) education to tie MAJ Reich’s legacy and Operation Red Wing into Systems Thinking framework. The class appreciated MAJ Mahoney’s and 2LT McKenna’s efforts to demonstrate how Systems Thinking applies to military operations, as well as the opportunity to remember MAJ Reich and honor his legacy!
