Philosophy's Avocation to Major
Why should future Army Officers major in Philosophy? The Army’s former Chief of Staff, GEN (R) Eric Shinseki, remarks that philosophical inquiry invaluably develops a leader’s ability “to communicate, to educate, and to motivate others” in the profession of arms. Because philosophy demands ethical reflection on new challenges and rigorous critical analysis, it is foundational to conceptual and leadership skills that are applicable to all branches of the Army. In the classroom, the mind, and on Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD), Department of English and Philosophy scholar-soldiers learn to lead others as they develop themselves.
