The Army West Point Volleyball team avenged its Friday loss to Colgate with a 3-0 victory over the Raiders in its home-opener at Gillis Field House yesterday.
“I'm so proud of this team for its toughness,” Army head coach Alma Kovaci Lee said. “We only have one returner in Monica Eckford in the lineup on offense. Everyone else is brand new. We have a lot of freshmen out there and they played with so much maturity today.”
Eckford led the Cadets with 10 kills. Army plebe Paige Fixemer and Savannah Bray each had seven kills, while Allanah Cutler added six. Firstie setter Hannah Presley also contributed seven kills, one shy of her career high, and had 22 assists.
Similar to Friday's matchup, Army won the first two sets. Though, this time around the Black Knights overcame the adversity in the third set. After Army jumped to an 18-10 lead, the Raiders managed to cut the Black Knights' lead to 21-20. Army dug in and managed to win the set 25-23.
“It's tough when you go on the road and lose in five sets,” Kovaci Lee said. “This is where character is built; when you have a tough loss, and you can come back within 48 hours and beat that team 3-0.” Read more.
