The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the regional athletes and coaches of the year for the 2021 NCAA DI Indoor Track & Field season on Thursday and listed amongst those honored were head coach Mike Smith and assistant coach Angelo Posillico. Smith was selected as the Women's Coach of the Year and Posillico was named Men's Assistant Coach of the Year. This year marks the first time that Smith has been recognized for a regional women's award and Posillico's first regional indoor award.
Smith, in his seventh year at Army West Point, has the Black Knights ranked No. 1 in the Northeast Region in addition to topping the leader board in four events and ranked second in three. Under his guidance, Army has seen a consistent rise over the course of his six year tenure. Prior to having their season cut short in 2020, the men's cross country team claimed its third consecutive Patriot League Championship under Smith's watch, while the women's cross country team defeated rival Navy at the Army-Navy Star Meet for the second time in three seasons. The Black Knights' senior Class of 2020 graduated as one of the most accomplished groups in program history. Calli McMullen broke 19 program records over her four years at the Academy and claimed 10 Patriot League individual championships. The success extended to the classroom as well, as Lynne Mooradian and Ben Petrella graduated as three-time Academic All-Americans and four-time Patriot League Scholar Athletes of the Year.
In his fourth year at Army, Posillico has been essential in helping lead the Black Knights in the field events, most specifically coaching the region's top athletes in the shot put and weight throw. During the 2021 season, Posillico has helped lead three athletes in each event to a top 10 regional ranking. Prior to that, he helped guide the Army throwing program to one of its most successful years in Academy history in 2019, including winning the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championship and setting four new Army West Point throwing records during the indoor and outdoor campaigns.
