Army West Point Men's Rugby Assistant Coach, Kyle Sumsion, has been selected by USA Rugby to be the newest head coach of the USA U20 National Team. Sumsion will be overseen by former Men's XVs National Team Head Coach Mike Tolkin who currently serves as the Director of Rugby for New York Athletic Club.
Sumsion arrived on the banks of the Hudson in the fall of 2018 after having a wealth of success both as a player and a coach. He was a four-time national champion and All-American while at Bringham Young University while serving twice as a team captain. He also appeared six times for the USA National Team and was captain of the Sacramento PRO team and then Major League Rugby's Houston Sabercats. Sumsion also recently signed on with professional rugby team, Rugby United New York in the summer of 2020.
“Pulling on the National team jersey and representing the USA is the greatest honor of one's playing career,” said Sumsion. “I am both excited and humbled by the opportunity to help identify and develop our future Eagles. It's my goal to develop quality young men on and off the field who can elevate our national team to new heights.”
In his two-year tenor at Army, Sumsion has helped head coach Matt Sherman elevate the level of competitiveness of the Army Men's Rugby program. He helped lead the Black Knights to a 13-9-1 record in his first season in addition to an appearance in the DI Men's Collegiate National Championships. Before having their season cut short in 2020, the Black Knights were 6-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play on their way to fight for a shot at a national title.
