Tyrese Bender, firstie on the Army West Point Men's Track and Field team, was named the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year for the indoor season the league announced Wednesday morning. Bender and Calvin Wetzel were named to the all-league academic team on the men's side, while Hannah Blakey and Anna Tovkach earned the honor on the women's side.
Bender is a firstie engineering management major with a 4.045 cumulative GPA. The San Antonio, Texas native finished first in the triple jump in three of Army West Point's indoor meets, including a personal best leap of 14.92m against Navy to tie the eighth-best mark in program history. He also recorded a personal-best distance of 7.19m in the long jump at the Crowell Open.
Wetzel owns a cumulative GPA of 3.984 and majors in mechanical engineering. During the indoor season, he set a personal best in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.4 to place first in the Crowell Open. Tovkach, an environmental engineering major with a 4.016 cumulative GPA, was named to the team for the second consecutive season. Of the five races she competed in during the indoor season, Tovkach posted top-two finishes in four. Blakey maintains a cumulative GPA of 4.108 and majors in Persian and French. She posted a total of six event wins and had top-two finishes in nine of the 10 events she competed in during the indoor season.
