Softball Splits a Pair of Pitchers' Duels
The Army West Point Softball Team split its doubleheader on May 9 with Holy Cross in a pair of pitching duels. The Cadets dropped the first contest 2-1 but claimed the second 1-0.
In the second game, Alicyn Grete took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but it was broken up by Holy Cross's Bailey Chavez with two outs. The yearling from Niceville, Florida finished the day with a two-hit shutout and struck out nine batters. This was the fewest hits she has allowed in a complete game in her career and is her second complete-game shutout.
Grete and Holy Cross pitcher Kelly Nelson dueled it out for the entirety of the game. Entering the sixth inning, Nelson had only allowed four hits. Army got three hits in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with just one out. Though, Nelson and the Crusaders were able to get out of the jam to keep it a scoreless affair.
The Black Knights were finally able to get a run on the board in the top of the seventh with Julianna LaRusso coming around to score on an error by Holy Cross's second baseman to make it 1-0. Grete struck out the side in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win for Army. Read more.
