Hand-On WWI Weapons for Cadets
Cadets from History 101 - “Army of the Republic” get hands-on with weapons from WWI, courtesy of the West Point Museum. During these lessons, cadets discussed institutional changes in the Army, problems with mobilization and modernization, changing ideas of service and military leadership, and changes in American society. Cadets also examined the motivations, struggles, and contributions of the more than 380,000 African-American servicemembers who served in the Army during the war. Interacting with material culture like this helps cadets bridge the gap of time to gain a better understanding of changes in tactics, technology, and the experience of service members in past conflicts aiding their understanding of combat in WWI.
