Published on May 19, 2022
The Nuclear Science and Engineering Research Center (NSERC) sponsored a research competition at the Pentagon, with teams from USMA, USNA and USAFA. The Soldier Mounted Advanced Radiation Tracking (SMART) Detector capstone team won first place, defeating teams from the other service academies. The SMART Detector capstone team consists of Cadets Vincent Gasparri ’22, Valentina Vincent ’22, and Enrique Gonzalez ’22. The research collaboration seeks to re-package a room-sized high energy physics experiment into a rugged, backpack-portable device capable of pinpointing the location of Weapons Grade Plutonium on a single walk past.
