The Army West Point rifle team competed in the second day of the GARC Championship on Saturday, posting the second highest score in the air rifle discipline. After shooting a 2286 in smallbore on Friday, the Cadets shot a 2361 in air rifle. The score placed Army behind only conference champion West Virginia in the discipline. The team finished with an aggregate score of 4647.
"I'm really proud of our team's airgun performance," head coach Web Wright said. "Our 2361 equates to just over a 590 average for the four scorers, which only a handful of teams can do. It felt good to be on the award podium."
Yearling Kaitlyn Kutz led the way for the Black Knights, qualifying for the individual shoot-off with a 595 score. Kutz placed fifth in the individual final which was won by West Virginia's Ginny Thrasher.
"Kaitlyn did a great job, making it into the final," Wright said. "She hung tough throughout the initial series and edged out a couple of really good, international-level shooters. It was a great showing to come in fifth behind the reigning Olympic gold medalist and reigning NCAA champion."
The Black Knights will now move on to preparation for the NCAA Championships in Morgantown, W.V., on March 8 and 9. Read more.
