Eight Cadets from West Point joined 29 students from the Hillel of Boston University for a week of community service and Jewish community fellowship between America and Brazil through coordination and support by the Hillel of Rio. Group activities included conducting service projects at two different elementary schools to repaint their sports court and paint murals on their recess area walls, clean up their sustainability garden, and provide English speaking interactions for the students in the classroom and during recess. The two Hillel groups enjoyed the sites of Rio de Janeiro with trips to the Copacabana beach, Corcovado Mountain (Christ the Redeemer Statue), Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Museum of Tomorrow, and the Botanical Garden. Fellowship events consisted of sunrise runs along Copacabana beach, different reflection sessions with Boston University Hillel, samba dance lessons, a variety of meals, meeting with Hillel of Rio members, Shabbat services, and a guest speaker opportunity with Mr. Osias Wurman, Honorary Consul of Israel. The West Point Jewish Chapel Choir performed numerous songs for over 150 school children from the Pedro Ernesto Public School who in turn had some of their students perform for us and shared lunch with faculty from the school.
