The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Friday that Army West Point Track and Field head coach Mike Smith and assistant coach Angelo Posillico have earned regional awards for the outdoor season. Smith was named the Northeast Region Head Coach of the Year after leading the Black Knights to the number one ranking in the region. The fifth-year coach also received the honor after the team's Patriot League Championship winning indoor season. Posillico was honored as the region's top assistant coach, earning Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year recognition.
In his second year at Army, he helped guide yearling August Cook and cow Michael Renard to the NCAA Championships. Army throwers reset school records in the shot, discus and javelin this season and scored 73 points as a group at the Patriot League Championships, including a school and meet record in the javelin at 72.45m. Plebe Jamir Gibson ranks top-25 in NCAA discus with a school record 58.64m. Overall, Posillico had eight throwers (11 entries in total) advance to the NCAA Prelims, the most of any gender by a throws squad. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.
