It was a whirlwind trip to Baton Rouge for twenty-five members of West Point Glee Club recently. The cadets performed at several events culminating in the Inauguration Ceremony of Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards '88. The ceremony was broadcast on Louisiana PBS.
Prior to the inauguration, the cadets visited the Governor's Mansion, toured the State Capitol, and observed the State Senate in session. Both houses were in session pre-ceremony to elect a new Speaker of the State House of Representatives and President of the State Senate.
The cadets executed all requirements with distinction and their performances were enthusiastically received. A particularly poignant moment occurred at the conclusion of the Inauguration: the audience of hundreds stood simultaneously when the Glee Club began its rendition of "America the Beautiful."
As most of Baton Rouge departed for New Orleans to cheer LSU on to the National Championship, the Glee Club winged its way back to "our dear old Alma Mater, our rock-bound Highland home." A significant honor they should long remember.
