Co-captains Clayton Hanson and Kaitlyn Kutz of the Army West Point Rifle team each individually qualified for the NCAA Championship match in Lexington, Ky., from March 13-14, the NCAA announced Tuesday afternoon.
Hanson qualified for the smallbore championships after shooting a 584 in the NCAA qualification match. On the season the Jamestown, N.Y., native averaged a score of 582.3 in smallbore with his high score of 586 coming in the all-academy match on November 2.
Kutz was the only individual qualifier to earn spots in both smallbore and air rifle. In the NCAA qualifier match, she posted a score of 583 in smallbore and 593 in air rifle. On the season, she's averaged a score of 578 in smallbore. In air rifle the junior has posted an average mark of 591.2 and has posted a score of at least 590 in all but two matches this season. Her high score in air rifle came on October 26 when she posted a 597 in Oxford, Miss.
The duo joins an elite group of shooters as there were just five shooters that qualified on an individual basis in smallbore and four in air rifle.
The Black Knights return to action for the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championship in Memphis, Tenn., on February 28-29.
