Army West Point Gymnastics head coach Doug Van Everen has announced that his team will open the 2021 season with a trio of virtual meets, beginning with a matchup with Penn State on January 16.
“We are excited to finally get this year going,” Van Everen said. “Virtius is a program that allows two teams to compete at their own facilities at the same time, while using remote judges. We have conducted several test runs, and the first time anyone will see it in action will be on January 16 against Penn State.”
The virtual format will also be on display when the Black Knights take on Oklahoma on January 30 and California on February 6. Army enters the 2021 season ranked 12th in the CGA Preseason Poll, coming off a promising conclusion to the shortened 2020 season.
“Our team is fairly well balanced on the six events, but high bar remains a challenge,” Van Everen said. “Our top performers for sure will again be team captains Matthew Martin and Mitchell McHugh, as well as all-arounder Mathew Davis. Matt is coming off last season as an Eastern Champion and an All-American, so we expect big things from him.”
The remainder of the team's 2021 schedule will be released in the near future.
