Cook Highlights First Day of NCAA East Prelim
For the third time in his career, August Cook will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship after placing sixth in the javelin event at the East Prelim yesterday afternoon, May 26.
Cook, who notched a 72.06m throw on his final attempt, was one of seven Black Knights to compete on the opening day of action at the NCAA East Preliminary Meet. The competition, which is being hosted at the University of North Florida, will run from Wednesday, May 26 – Saturday, May 29. Seventeen total cadets will represent the Army West Point Track & Field program. In addition to Cook, two other Black Knights competed in the javelin as he was joined by both Chris Barrett and Parker Brosious. Barrett placed 16th in the overall field with a 66.92m toss while Brosius, who placed third in his flight, finished 24th overall with a final mark of 64.29m.
While the aforementioned trio was competing, Marco Risi was also in action. The Italy native competed in the hammer throw and went on to finish his day 34th overall with a mark of 58.68m. Jamir Gibson closed out the day's field events with his performance in the shot put, where he notched a 17.85m throw. The mark is his own third-best all-time and earned him a sixth-place finish in his initial flight.
Luke Griner was the first Black Knight to represent the program in a track event at this year's meet, doing so in the 800m. With a final time of 1:52.13, he checked in at 39th overall. Griner's performance was followed by Calvin Wetzel, who competed in the 400m hurdles and placed 27th with a time of 52.09. Wetzel's effort is his third-best all-time and was just 0.06 seconds shy of his own personal best. Additionally, Wetzel was three places and 0.19 seconds off of qualifying for Friday's quarterfinals.
