English Hosts Dr. Viet Thanh Nguyen
The Department of English and Philosophy welcomed Dr. Viet Thanh Nguyen to West Point last week where he addressed the plebe Introduction to Literature course. Emigrating to the U.S. from Vietnam at the age of four, Dr. Nguyen grew up with an understanding of what is to be a refugee, an experience that informs his Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Sympathizer. Dr. Nguyen also participated in a seminar with cadets enrolled in the literature course "Power and Difference." Recently awarded both Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundation fellowships, Dr. Nguyen is currently the Aerol Arnold Chair and Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California.
